The Visual Theater Show
a.k.a. "Progress in Work" / "Work in Progress"

From the depths of the never-resting and ever-changing hearts, minds, and souls of the collective family of artists that make up South of Market's Bindlestiff Studio comes a sharing (or more conveniently called a "show") of adventurous beginnings and courageous attempts for a more formalized future theatrical presentation involving unique puppetry characterizations, daring video projections, and never-before-seen stage stylizations!

Simply put, it's a work-in-progress show called Progress in Work / Work in Progress with a bunch of fun, silly theater stuff at everyone's favorite epicenter of Filipino American theater, Bindlestiff Studio!

An intrepid and tireless crew of ruddy-blooded adventurers has braved a month-long trek up the steep, arduous mountains of Visual Theater - their guide, a local simpleton versed in the ways of puppetry and theater (tongue in A mood, Teatro Ng Tanaan, ShadowLight Productions, etc.) who is called by local villagers as Ramon Abad...or Ramon, for short.

Long hours (fueled by snacks and fruit drinks) spent in the discovery of various forms of puppetry, costuming and set design has resulted in a unique night dedicated to the lively presentations of their findings, which may involve audience questions and answers afterwards.

Come along and be a part of theater in the making!

Be advised, even though we're using puppets, the content of the evening's sharing may be too confusing for little children!

SHOWTIMES AND DATES:
Thursday-Saturday, April 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21

Doors open @ 7:30pm, show begins at 8pm

So, you got this idea of a story in your head and you want a Steven Spielburg production…but only have a 99 Cent store budget? …or, do you have this great image you’ve been doodling in your sketchbook or on phone books, receipts, the walls, etc…and you just don’t know how to let it come alive on stage?

Come along with me, Ramon Abad, and let’s explore and create living, breathing, visual theater together at Bindlestiff Studio. We’ll be exploring a variety of visual techniques and mediums that you can use for your own work or, if you’re ready and willing, for a full stage production and a run at our beloved Bindlestiff Studios in April.

Here’s what we’ll be venturing into:

PUPPETRY Puppets are amazing! There’s nothing you can’t do with a puppet. But if you think puppets are foam green frogs and foul-mouthed sock puppets, you just don’t have a clue! Why limit yourself? Let’s transform everyday objects into characters that can tell our stories. And let’s make our puppets from accessible materials in order to push traditional puppetry into some modern, experimental territory. Yes, shadow puppets too! Let’s look into some new ways of using shadow puppetry that’s never been done before at Bindlestiff. Also…puppet manipulation will be emphasized as well. Not only do you gotta make a great puppet but you gotta make it move great!

VIDEO PROJECTION Bring your video cameras and projectors and let’s look at how to make video projection a medium that has more potential than just showing video footage on a white screen. Have you ever made a video puppet before? Come over and let’s make a bunch together!

SET / COSTUME DESIGN Theater, at its best, has no bounds. Why limit set and costume design too? Tired of watching those renovation shows on TV? Come on down to the workshop and release your inner designer! If you know some basic carpentry, painting and sewing techniques and have the tools, let’s make some interesting sets and costumes. Even if you never got beyond the birdhouse in woodshop at school, no problem! There’s a heck of a lot creative ways to make a set and a costume! Even a prop or set or a costume can tell a story.

Well, whaddya say? Don’t be shy, just give it a try!
Hope to see you there.

Please call (415) 255-0440 or visit www.bindlestiffstudio.org for more info.

Bindlestiff's first-ever BAKLA SHOW receives positive review from the SF Bay Guardian!!!

Bindlestiff Studio — the only theater in the United States dedicated to the Filipino American experience — breaks new ground with the first Bakla Show. With this series of short vignettes, the performance space nods to the coming-out-to-your-traditional-community quandary. Though the term Bakla used to refer primarily to effeminate gay Filipino men, the show presents a more inclusive portraiture of queerness. Traditional stereotypes get smacked down with the very first piece, For Play, a sexy butch striptease, and are further confronted in quick succession by intersex marriage, drug-induced sexual favors, and an unctuous, robotic sex slave (Dennis Rodis) who spurns the advances of his frustrated owner (Aivy Cordova) in favor of the mandroid repair guy. In fact, where Bakla Show seems least engaged is in presenting the POV of the structured family unit — a pair of grieving parents (Pio Candelaria and Tita Rose Almario) or a pissed-off auntie watching the play with her lesbian niece (Aimee Michelle Espiritu and Cordova, respectively) — whose representation seems less multifaceted than those of the myriad Baklas on display. Eventually, the tug-of-war between familial concerns and equable outing reaches a humorous compromise in The Debut, which includes an MCed slideshow and a queer twist on Filipino folk dance. (Gluckstern)

IT'S 2007. IT'S TIME TO GET DOWNE!

Bindlestiff Studio is proud to present the first ever BAKLA SHOW!

The bakla or gay male in the Philippines is mostly stereotyped and ridiculed as the campy effeminate crossdresser or hairdresser. Bindlestiff's production takes a more inclusive view by bringing the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, downe and transgender artists to the forefront. Filled with poignant, provocative and hilarious stories, the Bakla Show challenges preconceived notions of what it means to be Filipina/o, American and queer. Vignettes include a Filipino style debut that takes on a new meaning of "coming out" to a futuristic story about a robotic mail order husband who isn't quite what he seems. Join Bindlestiff Studio as we celebrate the struggles, joys and love of being bakla.

Happy Holidays from Bindlestiff Studio!

We would like to take this time to THANK YOU for making the following milestones possible this past year!

Programming
Despite the lack of an Artistic Director and the limitations of our interim theater, Bindlestiff continued to present innovative and culturally relevant programming. During the 2006 season, Bindlestiff presented 26 show titles totaling 67 performances, reaching over 3,000 audience members! To date, Bindlestiff has raised $26,717 in ticket sales this year.

Capital Campaign
Bindlestiff made tremendous strides in its capital campaign efforts, bringing the organization closer to its original home on 6th Street. In total, Bindlestiff has received $609,050 in committed funds, which includes $417,000 from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, $100,000 from the San Francisco Mayor's Office, $60,000 from the Mayor's Office of Community Development, $15,000 from the Fleisshacker Foundation, and $17,050 from supporters like YOU!

Community
Through collaboration with the South of Market Community Action Network, a $15,000 planning grant was awarded to Bindlestiff from the Ford Foundation's "Shifting Sands Initiative." Bindlestiff has also become a proud member of the Four Filipino Centers Collaborative.

Staffing
Finally, Bindlestiff welcomes long-time Bindlestiff artist Gayle Romasanta as the theater's new Artistic Director! Hired through a grant from the San Francisco Foundation, Gayle will be in charge of programming and will help shape the artistic direction of the theater. Welcome back, Gayle, to the Bindlestiff family!

Once again, thank you for joining Bindlestiff in bringing cutting-edge and culturally relevant art to San Francisco and beyond.

Bindlestiff truly couldn't have done it without you!
Have a safe and memorable holiday!

What it Playback Theater? Playback Theater is an improvisational theater form created in 1975 by Jonathan Fox in New York. Audiences members provide stories and content for the performance which the conductor (facilitator) helps relay to the actors and musician. The stories are told, actors are cast into roles, and the story is acted out improvisationaly in a way to reflect back the essence of the telling. Performances focus on various themes reflecting the experiences of the audience. Unlike some forms of improv theater, the goal of Playback Theater is first to reflect back and honor the experience of the Teller, vs. make the audience laugh. This form of theater is practiced in more than 30 countries across the world and is being used by larger numbers of people to heal the effects of war, oppression, to promote cooperative spirit, empathy and to have a lot of fun!

ZACHARY ZWILLINGER EATS PEOPLE
ZACHARY ZWILLINGER - Male, an idealistic young man with an insatiable sweet tooth and a hunger for love. Socially awkward and unable to control his yearnings for sugar."

SUGAR PLUM FAIRY - Female, Zachary’s current/former girlfriend, the Sugar Plum Fairy of the Nutcracker. Nervous, fragile. A modern-day version of the Victorian woman—somewhere in her closet are the smelling salts."

LAUREN - Female, Zachary’s friend and confidante, who—not being made of sugar—has nothing to worry about. A witness to Zachary’s unfortunate attempts at a sustained romance."

Halfway Café
Blue - Male
Red - Female
Ensemble

Fetish
Jazz - Mid-twenties recent college graduate who is set to marry his girl friend of 3 years Jesse in 6 months. Jazz is a confident, charming, and patient gentleman. He depends greatly on his friends for advice and support.
Jesse - Early twenties a tom boy at heart with girlie qualities. Most of her friends are guys and her best friend is a flamboyantly gay queen Carlo who she relies on to divulge into her feminine side.
Bam Bam - Mid-twenties is Jazz’s best friend and best man in his wedding. Bam Bam represents a caricature of typical male stereotypes and his mannerisms and responses are often exaggerated.
Rocky - Late-twenties works in sales at a marketing company. He enjoys playing a father figure to his friends and being the voice of reason, logic, and experience.
Carlo - Jesse’s best friend. He has a flare for style fashion and design. His mannerisms are extremely flamboyant and mood swings are entertaining.
Overdue
Anne - Female, late 20s; the opposite of Bill. Also attractive, but because she works at it. Where Bill is an embodiment of unfocused natural ability, Anne is proof that you can take a little talent and stretch it a long way with hard work. Everything she has, she’s earned twice over."

Bill - Male, early 30s; attractive but it’s sometimes hard to tell from his lack of effort. Most of his life follows this theme of unrealized potential. He’s gotten by for so long on a combination of dumb luck, natural ability, and unconscious charm that he doesn’t really know how to work for things."

Kim - Female, early- to mid-20s; young, pretty, but not so pretty that you would wonder what she was doing at a speed date."
"Where are we going, where have we been?"

Ben - Asian-American; 32 years old; works as a customer service rep for an insurance company; thoughtful fellow whose nonchalance hides a fear of failure.

Dom - Asian-American; 33 years old; always between jobs; his charismatic and occasionally over-the-top personality sometimes compensates for a lack of self-confidence.

Merry - Asian-American, 31 years old; career-oriented woman who works as a junior account executive with a tech magazine; a Type-A personality who always needs a purpose with anything she does."

"You, Me, and Jose Luis" (still pending)

Kacey – a woman in her mid 20’s
Bridget – a woman in her mid 20’s
Jose Luis – an attractiveman in his mid 20’s to early 30’s

Film Festival

Friday October 20th (ONE NIGHT ONLY!) Show starts at 8pm

The 1st Annual PanSinema Film Festival looks to expand on Bindlestiff's commitment to presenting independent films produced by Pilipino, Filipino-American, and other Pan-Asian filmmakers.

This year the Pansinema Film Festival proudly presents “COLMA: THE MUSICAL”. Best pals Rodel, Billy, and Maribel find themselves in a state of limbo; fresh out of high school, they are just beginning to explore a new world of part-time mall jobs and crashing college parties. As newfound revelations and romances challenge their relationships with one another and their parents, the trio must assess what to hold onto, and how to best follow their dreams.

Colma: The Musical is the first Asian American made musical film and boasts 13 musical numbers featuring all original music by H.P. Mendoza. It is the feature directorial debut for Richard Wong.

For one night only, you can watch a movie that was filmed in our very own backyard and premiered at this years San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival!

Nearly everyone's concerned about being green these days, but artists have long been masters of reuse. Why do so many artists use recycled materials in their work? Some point to economics, some to politics, and others like the creative challenge. And part of the fun in a show of work based on recycled materials is the surprise: many pieces don't look recycled at all.

Bindlestiff Studio Receives $477,000 to Re-Build Community Theater
The Epicenter for Filipino American Arts Gains Critical Support from the
City of San Francisco

(San Francisco, CA) Bindlestiff Studio, the epicenter for Filipino-American performing arts, today announced it will be receiving $477,000 from the City of San Francisco to build a new 99-seat black box theater. On Friday, July 28, 2006, Mayor Gavin Newsom, along with the members of the Budget & Finance Committee, passed the City’s 2006-2007 budget, which earmarks $100,000 for the build out of the new theater on 6th Street. Through backing from Supervisor Chris Daly, Supervisor Fiona Ma, community groups, artists and residents, Bindlestiff received an additional $317,000 from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) budget. In addition, the Mayor’s Office of Community Development (MOCD) awarded a $60,000 capital grant for the build out of a green room to support programming for underserved youth in the South of Market neighborhood, pending lease negotiations with SFRA by September 2006.

In total, the theater has received $609,050 in financial support for the build out of the new theater. Bindlestiff has also received programmatic and administrative support through grants from The San Francisco Arts Commission and the San Francisco Foundation.

“Returning Bindlestiff to its original location in a newly rebuilt theater is a dream fulfilled for the countless artists, volunteers and residents who have given their blood, sweat and tears to create cutting-edge and socially relevant art in San Francisco,” said Bryan Pangilinan, Bindlestiff Studio managing director. “We look forward to strengthening ties with our local community partners and civic leaders in recognition of the thriving and culturally significant, yet often neglected Sixth Street neighborhood.”

“Without the tremendous support of Bindlestiff artists, Philippine Consul General Wen Sanchez, and community organizations including the Filipino American Development Foundation, Manilatown Heritage Foundation, and the South of Market Community Action Network, we could not have made it this far,” said Alex Torres, Bindlestiff board member and community activist. “The re-building of our space honors the hundreds of artists who have performed at the theater since it was established seventeen years ago and is a testament to the history, struggles and rise of the Filipino American community in the SoMa and beyond.”

About Bindlestiff Studio:
Established in 1997, Bindlestiff Studio is the nation’s only independent and permanent community-based performing arts venue dedicated to the cultivation of emerging and established Filipino American artists. Bindlestiff provides an affordable, professional theater to encourage artists to redefine the boundaries of social and artistic expression and provides the community access to diverse offerings in theatrical productions, music and film festivals, workshops in directing, production, acting, stand-up comedy, and writing, in addition to a children and youth theater program.

Bindlestiff needs your support as it enters into a new phase of artistic and organizational development. To donate or to volunteer, please contact Bryan Pangilinan, Managing Director, at (415) 255-0440, via email at bryan@bindlestiffstudio.org or visit our website at www.bindlestiffstudio.org.

The Movement: Roots, Rocks and Resistance. Join us! The Movement is a performance documentation of the Filipino/Pilipino-American story telling as told through the eyes, voices, and bodies of the Native born and American born movement artists of this generation. Utilizing the weapons of dance, theater, martial arts and shadow, take a ride with us as we take you to the past and the present.

See our ties with our Asian and African indigenous roots, our Spanish and American liberators, our leaders, our families of strong women and nurturing men, our wars, our migration for survival, our brotherhood with each other and other people of color, our passions, and our joys. Together we role towards the future of the Filipino Americans as we rally for love, justice, making sure that our presence is documented as a culture that helped build great nations with our fellow wo/man. The show will not only have a variety of dance styles and movement, but will also be accompanied by live musicians and other multi-media. Get ready for a journey of our resilient history and our resonant presence.

Through a series of workshops The Movement was developed by four Filipino American artists whose performance backgrounds varied, but were eager to share a different perspective of the Filipino American story through dance and movement. Being that Filipinos share a beautiful and yet tumultuous history, The Movement touches upon issues of colonization, violence, hatred, love, family, and resilience. The Movement is a collaborative project, in which cast members contributed ideas, inspiration, and choreography. The Movement: Roots, Rocks, and Resistance is meant to evoke and challenge emotions and perceptions, continuing Bindlestiff's tradition to cultivate, inspire and mentor the next generation of Filipino American artists.

I want to see this show through the movement of our history.

Bindlestiff Studio Extends Grant Agreement with the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency to Build
New Pilipino American Theater

(San Francisco, CA) Bindlestiff Studio, the epicenter for Pilipino American performing arts, today announced it successfully extended the terms of their three-year grant agreement with the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) to May 31, 2007. The extension will enable Bindlestiff to launch a visibility campaign and reinvigorate fundraising activities to begin construction on the newly built theater shell located at the basement of the 115-unit Plaza Apartments on 185 Sixth Street.

Since laying its roots in the challenging Sixth Street neighborhood fourteen years ago as an experimental theater company, Bindlestiff has thrived and transformed itself to reflect the diverse community that surrounds it. Over the past seven years, it has become a destination for Pilipino and American audiences across the bay area and throughout the nation. From theatrical productions, music festivals, film festivals to workshops in directing, production, acting, stand up comedy, writing and children’s theatre, Bindlestiff has continued to nurture artists (both established and emerging) and showcase the incredible talent and stories of Pilipinos in America.

It is a critical time in Pilipino American arts and culture. We have the opportunity to create a valuable community resource, a 99-seat black box theater devoted to the exploration of Pilipino American arts. We need your help. There are 1.8 million Pilipinos in the United States, and only one permanent performing arts space. Support Bindlestiff Studios, the epicenter for Pilipino American performing arts.

To donate or to volunteer, please contact Bryan Pangilinan, Managing Director, at (415) 255-0440 or via email at bpangi@sbcglobal.net.

Bindlestiff proudly presents...

Boondok Arts' "Bulaklak ng Dila"

Influenced by Manuel Ocampo, Red and Rizal, Filipino Collective Boondok Arts re-enters Bindlestiff Studio with “Bulaklak ng Dila”, an art installation and performance.

(San Francisco, CA) Last year, “Protektado”, their first exhibition as a collective, transformed Bindlestiff Studio into a sleeping womb. Murals by Mel Vera Cruz and England Hidalgo of a church covered in feces, photographs by Julius Dimanlig of the streets of Marikina, black and white prints by Lian Ladia of Christianized Aetas, and a single channel video documentary on the journey of an organizer to the Cordilleras were protected and shelled. This was an installation on “Our response to colonialism” they said.

This time from May 4th - 6th, “Bulaklak ng Dila (flower of the tongue)” an idiomatic expression in the Filipino language, Tagalog that means “exaggeration of meaning” or “subversion from the truth” will show the universal concept of language and hypocrisy in an art installation by England Hidalgo, Angelica Cabande, Lian Ladia and Julius Dimanlig. Along with paintings by Mel Vera Cruz and Marcius Noceda and a short film directed by Nono Ani and photographed by Peggy Peralta entitled, "TV” a 6-minute short-film that explores reel and real life in the eyes of a modern child.

Bong Agung (also known as Ogie Gonzales) will have a CD release of his first solo album. Bong Agung’s accomplishments are important to the Filipino-American music scene being one of the founders of Pinoisepop and was one of the originators of punk movement in the Philippines with his band Valley of Death. He also played percussion for the legendary jazz rock band Bobby Banduria, the soul pop princess Golda, Charmin and along side Kulintang Master, Dannongan Kalanduyan. His album, Homebody will be released on the opening day of the gallery, May 4th.

Second day will be band performances from LA-based Pedro Gil, NYC/Bay Area's Power Struggle, Tagalog punk and folk band Tsubibo and Hardcore punk band Eskapo from Vallejo. May 6th will end with the screening of Kidlat Tahimik’s movie, “Perfumed Nightmare”.

Boondok Arts is a collective formed by students from the San Francisco Art Institute, Academy of Art University, and grassroots artists from the Bay Area Filipino-American community. Boondok Arts promotes progressive expression of ideas through experimentation in different genres. Inspired by Jose Rizal and Juan Luna’s art collective in Barcelona and influenced by artists like Manuel Ocampo, Santi Bosse, Masferre and Raymond Red, these students, activists, musicians and scholars from the Philippines seek to create a movement that revolutionizes history through art.

***BAND/PERFORMERS BIO:

BONG AGUNG
A long time ago, in a black box theater, down in the natoma wine country in the south of market district of san francisco, california, there was once a community arts organization called teatro ng tanan. they produced a play called, "mr. and mrs. lacuesta goes dancing", by noel alumnit. this was the birth of the legendary bobby banduria band. the band's original line-up included bobby banduria on strings, fernando funk on bass, bong agung on drums and percussion. bong agung collaborated with musicians, poets, actors, teachers, organizers, researchers, aunties, uncles, lolas, lolos, tatay at nanay, pinsans, and anybody under the sun that loves music. bong agung loved music so much that he and his brother jing organized a filipino-american music festival called piNoisepop. now that bong agung is grown and has a kid named milo, he's been spending alot of time at home. bong agung got a computer, a synthesizer, a sampler, a drum machine, no turntables but a microphone. 'homebody' is an album made during stolen moments at home, and is near and dear to his heart...para sa iyo ito milo. tayo na magsaya. www.myspace.com/bongagung

TSUBIBO:
ANG TSUBIBO ay paikut-ikot, kaya't ang nakasakay rito ay pabalik-balik sa kanyang pinanggalingan, at matapos ang ilang sandali'y walang kinahihinatnan kundi ang kanya ring pinanggalingan. We found this on the web while researching tsubibo. Ferris wheel, that's what it means. Circles, giant wheel turning, cycles, seasons, life? It keeps going round and round, up and down. Dust to dust. check them out on: www.myspace.com/tsubibo

POWER STRUGGLE
For six year Dj Deetalx and I were a part of the Hip-Hop quintet Oddjobs. We had toured the country many times over, making friends and enemies alike. Sleeping on floors and random beds, driving from state to state in a van that was more like a pirate ship than a piece if American ingenuity. Those were great times but the fat lady sang her glass shattering verse, and it was time to bring it to an end. Kill the Vultures was born, and Dj Deetalx and I had created Power Struggle. Power Struggle is a personal voyage on a deserted high way a quarter past midnight. Please join us on our journey that began in Brooklyn NY and ended in San Francisco California. "Arson At the Petting Factory" will be available as the last week of October. pls. visit: www.powerstrugglers.com

PEDRO GIL
If a dose of catchy Power Pop squall is what you need, then look no further than Pedro Gil. The Los Angeles-based quintet is a layered fusion of different musical influences: Oasis, Tool, Bob Marley, Sublime, The Beatles, Weezer, and Saves the Day.

The hybrid love-child of defunct LA bands Two-Headed Chang and Six Years Into, Pedro Gil emerged in early 2002 with a set of irresistibly-hummable tunes and now has 2 self-produced EPs: Blurry All the Time released in August 2002, and New Love Songs In Broken English, released in August 2004. They are currently recording their first full-length album at Love Juice Labs in La Habra, CA. pls. visit: www.pedrogil.net

ESKAPO
Eskapo in Tagalog means refugee or escape. Eskapo was the name of Political prisoners who escaped Pres. Ferdinand Marcos's twenty year regime . Eskapo is a melodic political hardcore band with lyrics in Tagalog and English whose home town is Vallejo CA. Their music has been described as an energetic mix of Stiff Little Fingers meets Los Crudos with a nod to Pinoy punks band of old like WUDS, Yano, and Philippine Violators. “We appreciate anyone who gets into our music and the message of unity and peace that we portray”. check them out on: www.myspace.com/eskapo

FLORANTE AT LAURA GOES TO PRAGUE
Prague – “city of a thousand spires”, “world capital of puppets”. That is what the ANINO Shadowplay Collective has been keeping in its sight since it received the invitation to participate in the 10th World Festival of Puppet Art to be held on June 1 –10, 2006.

First held in 1996, the festival brings together the finest international puppet shows in an annual performance and competition in Prague. This year,
fifty puppet troupes have been invited to participate.

This year, too, marks the first time a Philippine participation has been solicited. ANINO takes this as an opportunity for its company to
showcase home-grown Filipino talent in yet another international event; for ANINO to dialogue with other puppet companies about the various aspects of shadowplay and puppet methodologies – from production techniques and dramaturgy to planning and funding; and, by performing Florante at Laura, to showcase both the traditional and the contemporary in Philippine art.

ANINO’s entry in the festival is Florante at Laura ng ANINO, isang makabagong interpretasyon. The
production is a free adaptation of the classic metric-romance by Francisco Balagtas. While preserving and utilizing Balagtas’s own words in some parts, the shadowplay makes the classic work more accessible by injecting, in other parts, modern language, visuals,
humour and contemporary music.
Since the International Institute of Marionnette Art, the festival organizer, has committed to provide each
puppet troupe with accommodation, meals, and pocket money for the duration of the festival only, ANINO has
been a hive of activity sourcing funds for travel documents and air tickets for its 12-person Florante
at Laura team. Solicitations for local and international support are on-going. Screenings of the video version of Florante at Laura ng ANINO have been
scheduled for April 20, 2006 at the Dream Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, at 5:00 and 7:00 P.M. For special screenings, interested parties are encouraged to contact the collective through anino@sining.net, telefax 932-4240, or
http://www.anino.sining.net.

COMPANY PROFILE
Teny Biboy Don Dempoy Datu Rosab Teta Marc Nono Ian Laya & Sam & guitar & dinner.

The ANINO Shadow Play Collective, established in 1992, is a group of multi-media artists dedicated to popularizing the art of shadowplay. Towards this end ANINO undertakes live performances, exhibitions, video, publication, and workshops.

Its founders and founding members belonged to the Philippine High School for the Arts community. However, in 1996, ANINO ceased to be school-based and became an independent company. Since then the collective has been composed of college students and
art practitioners. At present, it counts among its supporters the Museo Pambata Foundation, CASA San Miguel Foundation, Ibarang Arts Foundation and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Since 1992 the collective has been performing in an odd assortment of venues: museums (e.g. Museo Pambata,
Ayala Museum), schools (e.g. Miriam, St.
Scholastica’s, UP), theatres (e.g. CCP, Music Museum), plazas (e.g. Remedios Circle, façade of the Mauban Municipal Hall), shopping malls (e.g. Glorietta), cafés (e.g. Conspiracy, Magnet) and on board an inter-island shipping vessel.

ANINO’s productions treat political, social and environmental issues; Philippine history and social as
well as cultural life; and Philippine folklore, legends and literature. A few of these productions are two full-length productions: Ibalon (based upon a
Bicol epic) and Florante at Laura (based upon Francisco Balagtas’s classic); 3-7 minuters like Oyayi
sa Mundo (performed to Buklod’s song), Manong Pawikan(performed to Joey Ayala’s song), Hiroshima (performed
to Cynthia Alexander’s song), and Ulan (performed to the Dirty Kitchen song); and 4- 15 minute narratives such as Juan Picas, Mariang Sinukuan, and Bituing Marikit.

International and local festivals the collective has participated in are UP Arts Festival (1993 & 1997), Lusong Theater Festival (1996), Pundaquit Arts Festival (annually 1997 -present), Ganap Theater Festival (2000), Chin Chuan Arts Festival in Taiwan (1998), 1st International Festival of Shadow Theatre in Greece (2001), and Pilak Luzon Grand Production [commemorating the 25th anniversary of the CCP Outreach Program] (2004).

Although it began teaching shadowplay as early as 1992, it was not till 2004, that ANINO devoted a greater part of its energies to conducting workshops
and organizing other shadowplay troupes with a view to creating a national federation of ANINOs. It now has
among its associates the ANINO ng Zambales based in CASA San Miguel, the CAP-ANINO based in Museo Pambata
and the UP-ANINO of Diliman.

BINDLESTIFF STUDIO IS PROUD TO CO-PRESENT:

COLMA: THE MUSICAL

World Premiere
USA 2006 | 111 mins | Color Video | English

credits:
Director: Richard Wong
Producers: Richard Wong, Paul Kolsanoff, Angel Vasquez
Writer: H.P. Mendoza
Cast: H.P. Mendoza , L.A. Renigen, Jake Moreno, Sigrid Sutter

IN PERSON: Richard Wong, H.P. Mendoza, L.A. Renigen, Jake Moreno, Paul Kolsanoff

In the town of Colma, just south of San Francisco, the dead outnumber the living one thousand to one. Here, one wouldn’t expect teenagers to burst out in song, or dance around cemeteries and streets. But in COLMA: THE MUSICAL, that’s exactly what happens, accompanied by enough catchy melodies, thoughtfully funny lyrics, and poetic teenage protagonists to compete with the best of Broadway.

Originally conceived as an indie pop album, COLMA: THE MUSICAL is the cinematic realization of writer H.P. Mendoza's and director Richard Wong’s collective vision. Wong’s virtuoso cinematography is on display in the nearly eight-minute, single-take “Crash the Party” sequence, and his multi-screen editing make the film (and the town) fun to look at. Amusing and affectionate, brought to life by an appealing collection of local talent, COLMA: THE MUSICAL is a love song to the city, and to the residents who dream of a better (and more musical) life.

Feel what it’s like to leave something behind, experience culture shock, and see the world from a place we’ve all been to, but rarely visit. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t belong, welcome home.

The FOB Show: Return of the Comeback will run Thursday thru Saturday March 30-April 15, 2006 at 8pm. All shows will be held at Bindlestiff Alley, 505 Natoma St. (between Howard & Mision), San Francisco. Reservations are being taken immediately at (415) 255-0440. Ticket prices are $10-15. Proceeds will benefit the FOB Troupe and the Bindlestiff Capital Campaign to rebuild the theater at its original location on 6th Street.

THE FOB SHOW is a multi-genre production that captures the immigrant experience from a uniquely Filipino perspective.

Through puppetry, scripted drama, sketch comedy, improv, film, animation, song, poetry, live instrumental, movement and dance, this production is the opportunity for the Filipino immigrant community to express, explore, and showcase their existence and interaction with the world at large.

This show is meant for everybody and anybody. For anyone who wants to laugh, cry, or relate with us. For anyone who’s willing to listen, learn, and see … through our transient eyes.

Bindlestiff Studio proudly presents a return engagement of their critically acclaimed touring production "Alamat," a play by Filipino playwright Rodolfo Carlos Vera, to be performed at San Francisco City College's Diego Rivera Theater on Friday-Saturday, December 9th-10th. Directed by Louie Pascasio and performed by resident Bindlestiff Players, "Alamat" had previously been staged at El Camino High School and at Serramonte Del Rey in October during Filipino-American History Month.

"Alamat" (Legends) explores the intricacies of Filipino folklore and Filipino-American history through the eyes of Pat, an American-born Filipino of northern Philippines Kalinga tribal ancestry. Pat seeks to understand his own personal identity by visiting his homeland for the first time to bury his father, Gadiaman, a warrior who came to the US in 1946 after serving United States Army Air Force Far East (USAAFFE) in WWII. For the first time Pat meets his 85-year old grandfather Ochas, a Kalinga who had come to America in 1904 as part of an indigenous Filipino exhibition at the St. Louis World Exposition and whose desire to reclaim his lost dignity still haunts him. The story carves out a life montage for these three men juxtaposed with myths and legends that speak of truths, parallels and folk insights considered archaic in modern times but whose wisdom is more enduring than time itself.

Now in its eighth season as the epicenter for Filipino Amercian Arts, Bindlestiff Studio continues to expand the horizon for Filipino dramaturgy with "Alamat." The production is supported in part through grants from Theater Bay Area, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, and the Walter and Elise Haas Foundation.

This production marks the first time Bindlestiff Studio has presented at the historic Diego Rivera Theater. These two shows will also be the final performances of the touring production.

About Bindlestiff Studio
Founded in 1989, Bindlestiff Studio is the nation's only permanent Filipino-American experimental theater space. A community-based performing arts venue dedicated to the cultivation of emerging and established Filipino American artists, Bindlestiff is anchored in the Sixth Street South of Market Street community where the highest concentration of Filipinos, including many World War II veterans, in San Francisco reside. For nearly ten years Bindlestiff Studio has educated the public about Filipino American culture and the arts through original and experimental works, public workshops, concerts, readings, and other events with the integration of various disciplines including performance, visual and literary arts, film/video and music. Displaced from its original theater to make room for badly needed affordable housing units, Bindlestiff has currently been re-located in by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency to an interim theater space. The theater is eager and awaiting its chance to go home to its orginal space pending on the success of raising $ 165,000 by December 31, 2005.

Hurricane Katrina Benefit at Bindlestiff Studio

Join Bindlestiff Studio for an evening of music and poetry Friday October 28th at 7pm benefiting the victims of hurricane Katrina.

The devastation brought on by Katrina has brought the Bay Area community together in support of the ongoing relief efforts. Many smaller communities in the Gulf region outside New Orleans have been largely overlooked by the mainstream media. KPFA radio recently broadcast an interview with a relief worker in Mississippi who said that food supplies are still needed, as residents in the stricken areas store food for the winter months. Those supplies have dwindled and basic medical supplies are urgently needed. Relief workers and residents have not had a chance to mourn the losses they've faced as they are trying to survive day to day as best they can.

Date & time: Friday October 28th, 2005. Doors open 7PM

Bindlestiff Studio Celebrates Filipino American History Month with
Touring Theater Production
Alamat Production Makes Stops in Three Bay Area Theaters

San Francisco August, 2005 - In commemoration of the Filipino American History Month in October, Bindlestiff Studio, the epicenter of Filipino American arts, today announced an upcoming touring theater production of writer Rodolfo Carlos Vera¹s Alamat (Legends), a performance project about identity, history and folklore.

The play will run for eight shows starting on
October 6-8th at El Camino Theater in South San Francisco,
October 21-22 at Serramonte del Rey Theater in Daly City and ending on
December 9-10 at the Diego River Theater of City College of San Francisco.

The play is ready for booking outside of San Francisco.

Directed by Louie Pascasio and performed by resident Bindlestiff Players, the play features the braided story of three different generations of Filipino men dating back to the 1904 St. Louis World Exposition in Missouri when a large group of indigenous Filipinos came to America clothed in their sacred traditions, haunting chants and pulsating beats. Alamat is a story about reclaiming one¹s heritage through myths and folktales waiting to be retold and reawakened.

³Bindlestiff Studio believes in the role of the arts in building vibrant communities which take pride in celebrating the diversity of its values, traditions and history,² said Artistic Director, Louie Pascasio. The play creates a mosaic of dramatic storytelling fusing traditional forms and stylized improvisations in drama, music and choreography.

Now in its eighth season as the epicenter for Filipino Amercian Arts, Bindlestiff Studio, continues to expand the horizon for Filipino dramaturgy with Alamat. The production in supported in part by Theater Bay Area Cash Grant.

For booking information or to make reservations call (415) 255-0440
or email info@bindlestiffstudio.org.

More About Alamat
By Filipino writer, Rodolfo Carlos Vera, Alamat (Legends) is a story about identity, history and folklore. Pat, an American-born Filipino of northern Philippines Kalinga tribal ancestry, visits his parents¹ homeland for the first time to bury his father, Gadiaman, a warrior who came to the US in 1946 after serving United States Army Air Force Far East (USAAFFE) in WWII. For the first time Pat meets his 85-year old grandfather Ochas, a Kalinga who had come to America in 1904 and whose desire to reclaim his lost dignity still haunts him. The story carves out a life montage for these three men juxtaposed with myths and legends that speak of truths, parallels and folk insights considered archaic in modern times but whose wisdom is more enduring than time itself.

About Bindlestiff Studio
Founded in 1989, Bindlestiff Studio is the nation¹s only permanent Filipino-American experimental theater space. The theater is awaiting its chance to return to its original home, pending the success of raising one million dollars.

Bindlestiff Studio revisits a legacy of literary greatness

San Francisco, CA - Bienvenido Santos, a prolific writer of fiction of his time, captured the emotional complexity of Filipino Diaspora in the 50s and 60s where immigrant life was suffused with nostalgia and the realities of alienation and dislocation. His is a body of work that articulates the multi-layered dimensions of living in America and all that it takes to survive the throbs of inevitable solitude and cultural estrangement. His narratives are poignant, funny and warm in the way he relates the clandestine encounters between Pinoys in an adopted homeland. The pervading collage of his characters' social and emotional landscapes are those that any immigrant from any generation can identify with. Part of its commitment in celebrating the works of Filipino writers whose poetic language and lyrical prose continue to
enrich our creative identities, Bindlestiff Studio brings to the stage
three of Santos' short stories adapted by Chicago-based writer Larry Leopoldo.

Scent of Apples talks about a brief encounter between a Filipino Professor who is visiting Kalamazoo, Michigan and a self-effacing apple farm worker and their spontaneous journey into a world far removed from where they are and yet still connected by warm memories of their youthful past. Directed by Mark Marking, the one-act features Roberto Davina, Eric Fructuoso, Jamie Nallas and Loraly Rean Borja.

The Day the Dancers Came is about two Pinoy old timers in Chicago who share the same dreams of reclaiming their lost identity in a foreign land. They both struggle to keep their lives attainable despite years of alienation from a culture with which they hope to reconnect when a group of folk dancers come for a visit. Featuring Julius Dimanlig and Jose Saenz and directed by Louie Pascasio.

Immigration Blues is a light drama set in San Francisco about two sisters who make a surprise visit to a Manong in his 60s, for an afternoon of nostalgia and camaraderie, or so it seems. As they
reminisce the days of their youth, the three find instant connection only to be interrupted by a hidden agenda lurking all along in the minds of the two women. Directed by Lorna Chui Velasco, this one-act features Aureen Almario, Pio Candelaria and Ria Oblea.

The trilogy of one acts takes center stage on August 11-13, 18-20,
Thursdays - Saturdays, 8pm at Bindlestiff Alley on 505 Natoma on 6th
Street between Howard & Mission.

For ticket reservation and information, call (415) 255-0440 or visit us www.bindlestiffstudio.org
Tickets at $8-$15 (sliding scale) The trilogy is also a proud participant of the Tanghalan Theater Festival for the annual celebration of Pistahan.

The Queue: Filmmaking Workshop

STARTS NEXT WEEK!

WHAT:
Bindlestiff Studio is eagerly looking for its next generation of
aspiring filmmakers and directors for this year's installment of The
Queue Filmmaking Workshop. Since the inception of The Queue, one of
the main goals was to create a network of creative people and nurture
the growth of a local, self-sustaining film community. This year we
want to take that a step further. We have invited community-minded
individuals who have acquired invaluable experience in the area of
film production to share what they have learned out in the field with
the participants. You can learn more about the history of The Queue at
http://www.jeproks.com/about.html

WHY:
The mission for The Queue is to provide its participants with the
necessary tools and skills to produce a short-form screenplay, from
conceptualization to final cut, within an environment that best
replicates the process and protocols of an independent production.
While the curriculum will deal with the theory and practical
application of filmmaking, it will also stress the notion that a film
production is a collaborative process, relying on teamwork and
effective and efficient communication.

Dalagas & Tomboys: A Family Affair marks the return of the queer Pinay artist collective, Kreatibo*, to the Bindlestiff stage. Presenting original works that delve even deeper into themes of gender, sexuality and Filipino identity as experienced by lesbian, bisexual and transgender
Pinays, Kreatibo boldly innovates traditional Philippine artistic forms, embraces modern day
pop culture and utilizes comedy, drama and satire to bring new meaning to the concept of family. A dyke couple going to couples therapy for the first time only to be confronted by an elder Pilipina therapist who reminds them of their mothers; a
surreal conversation between a daughter and her talking balikbayan box; the consequences of bringing your same sex partner to a salsa club; a fantastical daydream involving ballroom dancing and the quintessential family party; and a queer wedding . . . guerilla style. These, and other stories will engage audiences in a provocative exploration of both intimate and social issues.

Directed by Michelle Bautista

Cast: Maiana Minahal, Lolan Sevilla, Patty Tumang, Jinky de Rivera, Tina Bartolome, Aimee Suzara, Morningstar Vancil, Cynthia Blancaflor, Nedjula Baguio and Geene Gonzales!

* Kreatibo is a queer Pinay artist collective born out of the need to take our stories out of the margins and into the spotlight. Using music,
movement, words and images to tell these stories, we are the defiant fist held up in the face of violence and oppression targeting our communities. We are dedicated to the
preservation and creation of our collective memory and use artistic forums as a means of cultural
activism.

About piNoisepop:
One of the only Asian/Filipino American music festivals in the country, piNoisepop recruits Asian/Filipino American bands from all over the U.S. to perform original music; focusing on bands that are willing to create and perform their own sound through the exploration and experimentation of various music genres, including rock, punk, hip-hop, jazz, indigenous, folk, and world music. The Festival derives its name from the slang term “pinoy” or “pinay,” meaning Filipino man or woman; and “noise” which defines the spontaneous sound of our music. Since its inception in 1998, the Festival has featured several bands, comedians, Spoken word artists, dancers, and filmmakers. In three sold-out nights, the Festival features 20 bands, introducing a diverse array of Asian American artists to a broad audience, and helping young artists advance their careers. The Festival was originally conceived as a venue for Filipino American musicians in the Bay Area. In its second year, organizers were stunned to receive applications from Filipino American bands across the country who had heard of the Festival’s extraordinary inaugural success. By the third year, the Festival had expanded to include bands from other Asian American communities and presentations in other disciplines. In 2002, the Festival led to a four-month national tour, introducing youth in different cities to the exciting experience of contemporary Asian American music.

AMID dilapidated buildings, homeless people and drug peddling on 6th and Market streets in South of Market (Soma), a San Francisco neighborhood known for its dicey alleyways that cut along strips of hip loft spaces for multimedia types, the only Filipino American theater space of its kind struggles to keep its doors open.
