SAN FRANCISCO, CA. Bindlestiff Studio and South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN) presents the “Yes We Can-Can: SOMCAN Comedy Jam” a comedy show featuring headline comics Joey Guila ("Nutshack" MYX Channel) and Kevin Camia (Comedy Central's "Live At Gotham." The show will also include performances by Andrea Almario, Frankie Quinones, Rad Reyes, Dennis Rodis (finalist in the AATC ComedyFest), Bindlestiff Studio's sketch comedy group, Taste Better Wit and hosted by Allan Manalo.
The proceeds will benefit the efforts of SOMCAN (South-of-Market Community Action Network), a grassroots, nonprofit based in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood that focuses on building the leadership and community organizing skills of low-income youth and parent SoMa residents. Youth and parent leaders go on to lead SOMCAN campaigns to preserve and create a healthier SoMa neighborhood, which includes pedestrian safety, affordable housing, workforce development, and open space for low-income residents.
Learn about local issues affecting the SoMa’s low-income residents and how you can help while enjoying a few laughs with the community too. The SOMCA Comedy Jam will be held at Passion Café, 28 Sixth St., SF, 94103, on April 28. Doors open at 6:30. Complimentary food from Passion Café along with Sangria (for $3) will be served. $15 for advanced tickets can be purchased online at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/165579 or $20 at the door.
In 2001, a group of grassroots organizations witnessed the gentrification and displacement occurring in the SoMa neighborhood, and in response, formed the South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN) to dedicate themselves to serving the needs of those being directly affected - youth, seniors, veterans, the Filipino community, low-income residents, and the homeless - through providing much-needed resources for community organizing. Since then, SOMCAN has achieved a number of successes in community organizing, leadership development and community planning.
