BUFFALO'ED was awarded the 2009 Alexander Wallace Gerbode/William & Flora Hewlett Foundations Playwright Collaboration Commission Grant for World Premiere.

About the Play:
BUFFALO'ED expands on the Buffalo Soldiers' history to include the 1899 skirmish in the U.S.-acquired Philippine Islands between Filipino rebels and African-Americans soldiers who eventually joined forces. Our stage version integrates the native fight practice of Kali or Eskrima increasingly abolished over 330 years of Spanish control. Filipinos continued the practice during U.S. occupation, clouding their fighting techniques in dances, the act of which relates to African-American slaves' secret communication through spirituals. Through dramatized letters: an African-American couple transcend their separation by war; Filipinos rebel as their nation is being absorbed; Buffalo Soldiers review their lot 34 years after Emancipation; Americans debate pro's and con's. As it was written soon after 9/11, the play comments on current foreign occupations, the recognition of similar treatments, and unsung heroes back home and behind the scenes.
