Bindlestiff Studio is proud to screen performance footage from one of its most beloved productions. Originally performed in 2010 to sell-out crowds during its entire run, THE BAKLA SHOW 2: MYTHS RETOLD, REALITIES UNFOLD explored the awkward, painful and joyful realities of being Filipino and bakla (the Filipino word for “gay”) through the lens of myths, legend, and folktales. Sketches performed in the innovative show went on to garner numerous awards and accolades, including: Edgar Poma's “‘Tude and Gratitude” which, as part of Eat Our Shorts, was recognized with the SOLD OUT! Award for outstanding box office performance at the SF Fringe Festival 2010; and Emmanuel Romero's “Viewer Discretion Advised (Tape 96)” which was adapted by Drew Stephens into a much-lauded short film – (Best Fest Short Program - LGBT Film Festival, Audience Award – San Francisco Scary Cow Film Screening, Best Short - Cinema St. Louis Q Fest, nominated Best Short – Barcelona Int’l LGBT Film Festival).

Director, Lorna Velasco, remounts her inspired Shakespearean adaption, A PINOY MIDSUMMER, at Bindlestiff Studio, July 11-20. Last year’s world premiere run played to sold-out crowds for all 10 performances, and this return engagement promises to be one of the summer’s hottest tickets. As a special fundraiser for Bindlestiff Studio, the cast and crew have graciously devoted all tickets sales towards keeping the theatre running.
A PINOY MIDSUMMER is a re-imagining of William Shakespeare’s classic A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, merging the classic text with bawdy Tagalog slang, Philippine folklore, shadow puppetry, movement, and traditional/modern Pilipino music. It begins in a world bound by class, law, and tradition; characters then find their way into the fairy world of the woods where European mythology meets Filipino folklore, where boundaries are rendered invisible and anything becomes possible. The stand-out performances of the hilarious Rude Mechanicals – presented here as Filipino laborers - add a layer of political satire and Vaudevillian flair to Shakespeare’s beloved comedy. A PINOY MIDSUMMER is truly an adaptation like none you’ve seen before.
